DJ Madout & DJ Paul Michael

Island Saturdays

From the pit

Days before this, DJ Madout made history in New York — the first selector to ride off the float at the Jamaica Independence parade, a moment that crossed a million views on IG before the week was out. Then he brought that exact pressure to Alchemy in Providence for Island Saturdays, and you could feel the momentum walk in with him. There's a version of a DJ set that's just song selection, and there's what Madout does, which is closer to conducting — reading the room, stacking the pull-ups, letting a riddim breathe just long enough before he yanks it back. Alongside resident DJ Paul Michael, he shelled the night. From a photographer's standpoint the DJ booth is one of the hardest things in this scene to shoot well: it's dark, it's cramped, the subject barely moves, and the whole story is in the hands and the face. So you wait for the moment the selector reacts to his own drop — the split second the crowd noise hits him and it shows. That's the frame. Island Saturdays is a Providence institution and this was one of its bigger nights, the New York energy poured straight into a Rhode Island room. These images are viral momentum made physical: a selector at the top of his run, and a dancehall crowd that came to sweat.
